Under construction ..........

The 10x22 Bench Top Metal Lathe is a popular purchase for hobby machinists and is available from multiple suppliers sporting there own name plate.  My particular purchase was from Grizzly Industrial model G0752 which is simply a model G0602 with a variable speed spindle.  In this webpage I'll detail the interesting discoveries I make along the way during my effort to convert the lathe to CNC.

Basic Layout of Grizzly G0752 / G0602 Lathe:
So to start off I've been modeling the Grizzly G0752 / G0602 Lathe in CAD and have found some interesting things which may be useful to someone considering modifying this lathe.  Visit the "CNC Lathe: Documentation" section if you'd like the CAD files.

First of are some basic dimensions of the lathe.

Quick Change Tool Post (QCTP) modification:
The original tool post for this lathe is a 4 position manually rotating holder which accepts a 5/8" tool.  Many hobby machinists replace this with a quick change tool post from Phase II or other brand which gives convenience in tool swap and avoids needing to shim the tool by providing an adjustment nut to set the tool to spindle center.  The model QCTP which best fits this size lathe is a AXA series which is also known as the 100 series.  The picture below will cycle through a view of the original tool post & a Phase II 100 series QCTP showing the dimensional relationship with the chuck.

As you can see the original tool post can accept a maximum tool of 1/2" and still allow shimming to the spindle center
